The use of nanoparticles in medicine represents an upcoming area for targeted and safer drug delivery to its site of action. Percuros is working on a number of different types of nanoparticles including PLGA and silica. A therapeutic payload is packaged inside the nanoparticles to allow for a safe passage through the bloodstream until they reach their intended location. This approach minimises the damage to healthy tissue and allows for higher dosages as well as better efficiency of chemotherapy. On the outer surface, a molecule is conjugated to the nanoparticle that would allow specific targeting. The overall structure may then be monitored by imaging where optical, MRI, PET and radionucleotide labels can be incorporated.
